Web Hosting, Domain Names and IP Addresses

Web hosting in simple terms is hiring some space on the World Wide Web where you can upload and store information which can be accessed globally through a browser.

Your web hosting company hosts your web site on its server allowing you high speed connectivity and ensures that your information is accessed through a secure connection.

The company that hosts your website is a Web Host. The company allows people to use their server space for a fee while also offering a range of other services one will find necessary while hosting a site.

A web host has a lot of server space on a high speed and secure connection to the net. The web host may not only guarantee you server space for a fee but may also ensure round the clock technical support for your website, and other services critical to the smooth running of your website.

Shared Hosting & Dedicated Hosting:

Some web hosts allow clients to share server space with other clients for a lesser fee. This works the same way as normal web hosting does but with limited features and flexibility. Web hosts which offer dedicated hosting custom manage a clients needs. Usually an entire server is used by a single customer and the client is free to install whatever software they want on the dedicated host. If the Web Host also provides managing support to the host, then it's called a managed server. Managed dedicated servers are usually the most expensive of them all. Other services offered include round the clock management of hardware and software and technical support.

Domain Names:

A web site is mainly recognized by its domain name. A domain name is a unique name that identifies a particular website. Domain names are usually easy to remember words which direct a browser to the exact location of the web server. A domain name is usually translated by the browser into the Internet Protocol (IP) address. The IP address defines the exact location of computers on the Internet. A domain name usually consists of two or more parts which are separated by a period. The first part is specific while the second is a an extension such as .com, .net, .biz etc.

IP Addresses:

Internet Protocol or IP address is a numeric set which gives the exact location of a particular computer on the Internet. IP Addresses are similar for computers in the same country; i.e they are geographically based. An IP address is a set of four groups of numbers separated by periods. They can be logically divided into two parts: the network, which is similar to an area code, and the system on the network. A domain name directs the browser to an IP address. IP addresses can also be fixed of static and usually are given to each computer by the ISP (Internet Service Provider) by which it accesses the Internet. Therefore even computers which do not act as servers have an IP address.

A dedicated IP address is the numeric address of a registered domain name that enables the owner to use that registered domain name. It is often referred to as a static IP address. This IP address will be fixed and only for one customer’s use. A static or dedicated IP has some advantages. If you are running a server from your system then a static IP address will resolve correctly each time someone tries to access your site.
